Rossi to ride for Ducati in 2011

Ducati and Valentino Rossi have signed a two-year agreement for the nine-time World Champion to race with the “Rossa” of Borgo Panigale in the Ducati Team from 2011.
The arrival of Valentino in Ducati opens a new and exciting chapter in the Italian factory’s sporting history and, indeed, of the whole MotoGP Championship. The opportunity of lining up such an extraordinary rider and character is considered by Ducati to be of huge value to the whole Ducati MotoGP project.

“We are delighted to announce that Valentino Rossi will be with us from 2011,” commented Gabriele Del Torchio, president of Ducati Motor Holding. “He is a paragon of excellence in the world of motorcycling, coherent with our Italian company which is a standard bearer for ‘made in Italy’ excellence. These are key values for success in technology, design and sportsmanship. In addition to the strong and passionate intent of both parties, this agreement has been made possible by the committed support of our shareholder Investindustrial and all the sponsors associated with the Ducati Team, sponsors which have believed in this opportunity and share and support our choices.”

Filippo Preziosi, Ducati Corse General Director, said: “Firstly, Valentino is a great fan of motorcycles and so it has always been a pleasure for me to listen to his opinions. Until the Valencia GP he will remain a competitor, one so great that he has always given a special value to our victories, but as soon as he rides the Ducati for the first time we will work together on every single detail that will develop a bike capable of showing his huge talent. Working with Valentino is one of the most exciting things for every engineer, and it’s good to know we will have this great opportunity next season.”

Spies and Edwards enjoy some team bonding!

The dynamic of the Monster Yamaha Tech3 team this season will be an all-American one with rookie Ben Spies joining Colin Edwards for the 2010 campaign. In an attempt to cement their working relationship, the two Texans set off on a road trip and you can see the result in the attached video.

“It was fun,” said Spies of the experience of making the humorous short film. “I’m definitely not the loudest personality in the paddock, and I have a little trouble getting into the acting. Colin, on the other hand, I think he needs to go into acting when he’s done racing, because he’s definitely into it and pretty good at it! We went out there and crammed it all into a day and had one little incident that was pretty funny. We got to spend some time and have some good laughs.”

Edwards added: “We had an absolute ball with it. None of us knew what was going on until we showed up and they said: ‘OK, Colin, you’re the over-the-top, annoying, loud guy’. I was like: ‘OK, I’ll give it my best!’. It turned out all right. We had a good time with it.”

Watch the results in the attached video!

Biaggi double team triumph for Aprilia at Portimao

Max Biaggi's first double victory in the Superbike World Championship came after two tense and exciting races at the Portimao circuit in Portugal.

A mistake just four laps before the end of the race seemed to have compromised Biaggi's run to a second win of the day. In the span of one curve, he found himself relegated to third place, having been passed by both Haslam and Crutchlow. The Roman's desire to win was exceptional however, and he immediately regained ground on the Yamaha man and took off after Haslam, whom he managed two pass just two laps before the end of the race. Resisting the Suzuki's attempt to regain the lead, Biaggi crossed the finish line in first place.

Not since 1998 has an Italian rider (Pierfrancesco Chili at Kyalami) won a double victory on an Italian motorcycle. With these two wins Biaggi moves up to second place in the world classification with 69 points, behind his rival Haslam (85 points).

"It's a pleasure to be back on top after the problems we had in Australia," said Biaggi. "We've improved with respect to last year. The pace was a bit slower in Race 2 and we were all quite close. It was really a great battle with a lot of passes and a few mistakes. I'm really very happy for this dual victory because it is truly a great outcome, both for me and my team, as well as Aprilia, which is really doing a great job."

Alonso and Ferrari romp to victory in Bahrain

Fernando Alonso drove a superbly judged race to emulate Nigel Mansell and Kimi Raikkonen, as he sped to victory on his debut for Ferrari in Sunday’s Bahrain Grand Prix. Alonso chased Sebastian Vettel’s fleet Red Bull fruitlessly in the early stages, when both were running the super-soft Bridgestone tyres, but had an advantage after they had respectively switched to the harder compound on Laps 17 and 16.

Alonso then began to hunt down the German, whose lap times got slower and slower until the moment of truth arrived on Lap 34. That was when technical problems (initially thought to be exhaust, but later identified as spark plug failure) hit the Red Bull and the Ferrari dived past in the penultimate corner, to grab a lead it never lost. Felipe Massa had also closed in driving the second Ferrari and passed Vettel as they braked for Turn One at the start of Lap 35. Crucially, however, Alonso put in some fearsomely quick laps to break his team mate’s challenge, after that there was nobody left to put him under pressure.

As Massa consolidated second place, conserving fuel as a temperature problem in the cockpit obliged him to ease back, it was nevertheless a great day for the Scuderia. Vettel came under increasing pressure from Lewis Hamilton’s McLaren, which was a lot more competitive on the harder rubber. Eventually the 2008 world champion moved on to the final podium slot on the 38th lap after overtaking on the main straight.

Vettel almost fell prey to Nico Rosberg’s Mercedes GP, but hung on for fourth ahead of the Silver Arrow. Almost four seconds further back, Michael Schumacher’s return yielded a hard-fought sixth place, pressured all the way by 2009 champion Jenson Button in the other McLaren and Red Bull’s Mark Webber. Over the last 30 laps they were never more than metres apart.

A great drive rewarded Vitantonio Liuzzi with ninth for Force €ndia, while Rubens Barrichello was in 10th place for Williams, taking the final point.

There was drama from the start when Webber’s Red Bull spouted clouds of oil as the field braked for Turn One, and both Renault’s Robert Kubica and Force €ndia’s Adrian Sutil spun. They eventually finished 11th and 12th, with Jaime Alguersuari 13th for Toro Rosso. Nico Hulkenberg’s debut was marked by a wild spin early on, and the need to claw back to 14th in the second Williams.

Lotus won the race for the new teams, with Heikki Kovalainen placing 15th after a commendably reliable run. Sebastien Buemi was 16th for Toro Rosso though he stopped three laps from the end, and Jarno Trulli’s ailing Lotus was 17th, also three laps down.

There were more retirements than usual, with neither BMW Sauber making the flag, Bruno Senna’s HRT eating its engine, the Virgins of Timo Glock and Lucas di Grassi falling prey to mechanical problems (after the German had waged a great fight with Kovalainen), Vitaly Petrov’s strong early run in sight of points coming to nothing with a suspected suspension problem which was detected when he made his tyre stop on the 13th lap, and Karun Chandhok crashed his HRT on the second lap.

The result gives Ferrari the perfect start to the world championship with 43 points, ahead of McLaren on 21, Mercedes GP on 18 and Red Bull on 16. Alonso leads the title chase with 25 points from Massa on 18, Hamilton on 15, Vettel on 12, Rosberg on 10 and Schumacher on 8.

And the general verdict is that the ban of refuelling, while creating a slow-burn effect initially, made the racing much more exciting.

Valentino Rossi in Red on 20 and January 21 in Barcelona

Montmelò, January 21, 2010 - At the end of a two-day test session with Valentino Rossi in Montmelò circuit, he has more than 600 miles on the clock. After a wet opening day, as yesterday, the initial complex, the test was dedicated to champion of Tavullia the F2008, which is provided by F1 Maranello's Clienti department, ended with a very good result for team satisfaction.

Valentino was very pleased with my lap time 1.21.900, absent in the second round from behind, nearly as long as the time limit allowed to use the Catalan team's song: "We continue to the last three quarters of an hour to try to 'time attack' with a little gasoline and fresh tires. I would have given anything for the lap time. "Rossi said that he had much more fun than the last experience at Mugello in November 2008. "It's more fun in here, because it was a little easier. It's more business in Mugello, but this song here is really beautiful, with motorcycles and cars, though I must say that the turn 10 is a little tight and you're braking time later. "

Toseland looking for another golden year

Unlike most of his rivals in 2010, James Toseland knows what it feels like to be a Superbike World Champion, and more than once. He's been away in MotoGP for a couple of seasons, and thus has only had three test sessions to have a close look at his main rivals this time around in SBK. But he is sure of one thing even before he starts his 2010 season for real. SBK racing is going to be full of potential rivals, and not just for race wins.

"I think there are more rivals than ever before, with the exception of Troy Bayliss not being there," said Toseland at his team's launch last week in Italy.

"Troy was in there when I was last racing in SBK, and he was a tough cookie. There are seven Brits in there this year, and they are all capable of being in that top eight, top six, at some stage. Then there are the regulars like Haga, Checa, Biaggi, Fabrizio, Corser and others. Cal has only just jumped back on a Superbike again so he has to find his feet. You don't know how much he is going to improve but obviously he is going to. You don't know how much that BMW is going to improve for Troy Corser either. There are a lot of riders in the mix. In this championship this year there really are any of six riders who could stand on the top step. I think there are at least ten podium finishers. There are seven British riders who could stand on a podium! It's going to be great for the show."

In terms of how many other British riders there are in WSB in 2010 in general, Toseland welcomes such a high number, but draws a line under how important it is overall. He stated, "One thing to prepare myself for is to forget the ‘Battle of Britain', because it is just part of the battle. There will be many other riders in there."

Felipe Massa "brought in the same direction as in Germany"

Maranello - Four days after the German Grand Prix obviously too long to go racing without being at a race track! So after coming home to Monaco on Sunday night I went to a place called Lonato, near Lake Garda in Italy to have fun karting. It's like a Formula 1 race here, there was Michael (Schumacher), Kubica, Glock, Liuzzi and Nelsinho (Piquet) and the Client. It wasn'ta special occasion, it was not even a race, we just decided to come here and have fun driving karts with 125 teeth. Think we all lose F1 test and this is a good way to keep fit and occupied. Thursday afternoon, I went to Maranello when I attended an event that involves driving some of our customers around the Fiorano race track.

Going back a few days into the German Grand Prix, was on the podium is a good feeling, but also a strange feeling at the same time and it was definitely something I've lost. In this difficult season because it marks a good improvement occurs within our team. In some races we have scored points again, always in the top five, so to perform even better and finish on the podium is good, not just for me, but also in terms of motivating each person in the team and the factory. This proves we are still struggling but it is important for us to continue to work.

Ferrari we are often asked why we should continue to use the KERS and if you see a helicopter shot of the race starts you will see that me and Kimi, and the two McLarens were in our own class, make a lot of ground from the line. The point is that if we do not have the downforce level to win, at least give us the benefit KERS in other ways. I was a good weekend in Germany and there are some surprising performances, there is good bad other teams and I think this is because, apart from the two top teams, they are so close that if you have a little problem or a lap that was not as good as properly, you can slide in the time sheets from five to fifteen.

After a day at Maranello, I'll go back home to Monaco and I will stay there until Wednesday when it will be time to go to Budapest for the Hungarian Grand Prix. I do not have a very good outcome of this race but that does not mean I do not race well there: if you remember last year I've won in my pocket, but unfortunately my engine let me down with just two laps to go. It's a nice circuit to drive even if it is not really my favorite one, but asked me how we'll get in this race and to be honest I really do not know. I hope we can continue to make our package improvements, bring in the same direction as in Germany

Valentino Rossi managed to finish the second day of testing in Malaysia

Valentino Rossi leading the way for the second day running at Sepang today, concluding the first year exams at the top of the league. His Fiat Yamaha team-mate Jorge Lorenzo also on the speed of today, finishing third fastest test behind Casey Stoner.

The rain this morning meant the track was not completely dry until lunchtime and it was after one o'clock before Rossi left garage in the 2010 YZR-M1. World Champion, who was 31 in ten days, completing 32 laps and set a best time of 2'00, 925, just half a second slower than the pole time record for the song, set last year. Lorenzo put in a few laps in the afternoon but the track was still wet in places and so he, too, waited until after lunch to really get started. 22 years made great progress from yesterday and felt much more comfortable on the bike, finishing third fastest in 2'01, 680 after 60 laps.

The team will return to Sepang at the end of the month for the second of three pre-season tests.

Valentino Rossi - Position: 1st Time: 2'00, 925 Laps: 32
"After yesterday's second day was very nice as well, although we lost a few hours for the rain, and finally we were able to complete all our work. We are working on a new bike to find a better arrangement and I am pleased to be the fastest on the whole -- although this test is only important for me! In the next test, we'll have some new things but we're happy because we're fast and strong. There is room to improve, of course; Sepang has always been a good track for Yamaha, so we must wait until Qatar to obtain a better understanding of our level, but we have made a good start. "
